Woodstork Colony (Jax Zoo)  - April 16, 2006
These pictures were all taken on April 16, 2006 at the Jacksonville Zoo Wood Stork Colony.

Easter Sunday and it seems like most of the 'Easter' eggs are hatching. The colony is pretty noisy now with the sounds of baby chicks. There are 19 nests with chicks visible in them, and many more new hatchlings that can be heard but not seen. There are at least 7 nests with three chicks each.

The storks also continue to build nests in the small laurel oak we call Tree C - there are now 8 nests in that tree, up from just 5 a week ago.

The picture above depicts Tree A (left) and Tree B (right). The three smaller laurel oaks behind and to the left of Tree A are Trees C, D, and E.

Today's count:

  • Tree A: 48 Nests (9 with chicks visible; oldest chicks are 3 weeks old)
  • Tree B: 52 Nests (10 with chicks visible)
  • Tree C: 8 Nests
  • Tree D: 2 Nests
  • Tree E: 1 Nest
  • Total: 111 Nests
