Woodstork Colony (Jax Zoo)  - May 7, 2006
These pictures were all taken on May 7, 2006 at the Jacksonville Zoo Wood Stork Colony.

Much better day for counting today than last week. It was clear, sunny, and hot. Temperatures today reached about 90 degrees, so by noon there were many adult storks bathing in the pond to cool off.

Today's count:

  • Tree A: 48 Nests, 38 of them with chicks (93 chicks total)
  • Tree B: 53 Nests, 32 of them with chicks (81 chicks total)
  • Tree C: 8 Nests, 0 chicks
  • Tree D: 2 Nests, both with chicks (4 chicks total)
  • Tree E: 1 Nest, 0 chicks
  • Totals: 112 Nests, 178 chicks

Four-to-five week old hatchlings.

The adult (with blue band on right leg) is one of 4 wood storks in the colony that is fitting with the satellite tracking device. This one is in Tree B and is banded #212. She has 3 chicks.
