Merritt Island
National Wildlife Refuge
(MINWR) -
88 species
Five birders met Tom Dunkerton at a
rather crisp (chilly) 7AM at the MINWR boat ramp ready for action. We
determined with this size group, we
would change our itinerary to
include Viera Wetlands, since a few
of us had never been
there before and it was
showcasing the Masked
Duck at one of the
ponds...

Vaill Point Park (St.
Augustine) -
38 species
Several participants
joined us at the new
(under construction)
park at the end of Vaill Point Road. Billy
Zeits, our trip leader, took us on a
leisurely stroll through
the paved trails and we
identified plants and
birds. The day started
on the windy side, but
we still managed to get
an impressive list of
birds for the park's
first birding trip...

Ft. Matanzas National
Monument -
46 species
Fifteen eager bird enthusiasts
showed up for the trip. There were
excellent views of
bald eagles,
Eastern towhee,
gray catbird,
palm warblers
and ground
doves in the shrubs at the
edge of the beach access. At the
main entrance of the Fort, we had
great-crested
flycatcher,
black & white
warbler,
northern
parula warblers,
prairie
warblers,
blue-headed
vireo,
blue-gray gnatcatchers and
belted
kingfisher. A respectable
total of 46 species (in four hours)
was compiled. Special thanks to
Skip
and Lisa
for co-leading the trip.
